Principal's Report

Welcome to Year 7 parents and carers and welcome back to our Year 8 parents and carers. We have had a very smooth start to the year with last year’s staff returning and 20 new staff settling in very well. It is very pleasing to see our wonderful students at both year levels focused in their learning and working very well in all of their classes.

Our first event for the year is for Year 7 parents and carers to Meet the Teachers (and for us Meet the Parents) on Wednesday 25 February, 4.15pm to 6.15pm. I strongly encourage Year 7 parents and carers to attend with your student, who can show you around the school and introduce you to their teachers to have a chat. It is an informal session, without bookings so we encourage you to have a short conversation and move on to meet other staff. Our first Student/Parent/Teacher conferences are early in Term 2. These conferences are booked and can involve a more thorough discussion about your student’s progress.

We have School Council nominations and possibly an election taking place this month. Information will be sent out on Compass Newsfeed. If you are interested in being a parent representative, complete the nomination form and email it to the school. School Council is a very important group within the school, contributing to the strategic direction of the school and overseeing the financial accountability and the implementation of policies.  By participating, on school council, parents help create a better learning environment, improving educational outcomes and increasing parent engagement in the school community.

A reminder to parents about two very important ways that parents can help support their student at school.

The first is by supporting your child to attend every day, except when they are unwell. A high level of attendance and arriving at school (and class) on time has a very strong impact on student outcomes. Days missed add up and contribute to gaps in a student’s learning.

The second is to support your student to read at home. Research says that continuing to read regularly at home helps secondary students to achieve at a higher level in every single subject area.

We are looking forward to our first Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 17 February. Last year we were not able to hold a carnival due to availability of pools so we are very pleased to be holding this whole school event at Noble Park Outdoor Pool. Even if students are not participating in swimming races, they are still expected to attend to support others and to participate in some of our other non-swimming events. I look forward to seeing all of our students attending.

I hope everyone has a wonderful term and I look forward to meeting Year 7 parents. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Junior School Report

A Fantastic Start to the School Year

Welcome back and congratulations to all students on completing the first week of the school year. It has been wonderful to see so many students return safe, refreshed and ready to learn after what we hope was a restful break.

I would especially like to acknowledge our Year 7 students. You should feel incredibly proud of how smoothly you have settled into secondary school life. We have already seen many positive friendships forming, students supporting one another and a fantastic attitude towards learning. Starting high school can feel like a big step, and you have handled this transition exceptionally well.

To our Year 8 students, welcome back. It has also been exciting to welcome approximately 16 new students into your year level, with possibly more to come. I encourage you to continue demonstrating the inclusive and supportive behaviour that helps new students feel comfortable and part of our school community.

A reminder that our School Photo Day is approaching and will take place on Wednesday 11 February. All students are required to attend in full academic uniform.

Another important focus for this year is maintaining strong and consistent attendance. Arriving late or missing school not only impacts a student’s own learning but can also disrupt the learning of others. If there are any barriers affecting attendance, please contact the College as we are committed to supporting students and families to ensure success.

Families are also encouraged to familiarise themselves with Compass, as this is our primary platform for communication. Compass allows families to access important updates, monitor attendance and learning tasks, and communicate directly with teachers to discuss student progress. Maintaining this connection helps create a strong partnership between home and school, which supports positive learning outcomes for all students.

We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to seeing our students continue to grow, achieve and contribute positively to our school community.

Attendance & Uniform Expectations

Wulerrp Secondary College uses Compass to track attendance, lateness, phone breaches and uniform breaches.

Please be reminded of the following expectations:

LATE TO SCHOOL

  • If a student arrives late, parent/carer must submit an attendance note on Compass.
  • Being late disrupts the student's learning and the learning of others.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

  • If a student is not in full school uniform, the student must bring a signed note from home.
  • Take this note to the Junior School Office to receive a uniform pass.

CONSEQUENCES

  • Unexplained attendance or uniform breaches will result in a lunchtime detention.
  • An email will be sent to the parent/carer.
  • Detention involves half of lunchtime spent in the Junior School area, supervised by a Junior School staff member.

All students are expected to take responsibility and help create a positive and productive learning environment.

Thank you.

Student Leadership at Wulerrp Secondary College

This week at assembly, students were introduced to the 2026 student leadership opportunities at Wulerrp Secondary College. These opportunities include School Captains, Vice Captains, SRC, and a range of student leadership roles designed to build leadership skills, strengthen student voice, and contribute positively to our school culture.

Leadership at Wulerrp is not about popularity or titles. It is about service, responsibility, and representing others. Our student leaders play an important role in listening to their peers, modelling our school values, and helping to create a positive and inclusive environment for all students.

Applications for School Captains (Year 8) and Vice Captains (Year 7) are now open. We strongly encourage students who are willing to take responsibility, listen to others, and contribute to the school community to consider applying. We are very much looking forward to reading all applications and learning more about the ideas, values, and leadership potential of our students.

An equally important part of the leadership process is voting. Voting is a meaningful way for students to take part in democratic decision-making and to think carefully about the qualities of good leadership. Listening to speeches, considering candidates thoughtfully, and voting responsibly all help ensure that student leadership truly reflects the values of our school community.

Student leadership is strongest when many voices are involved. We encourage all students to engage respectfully with the process, whether by applying, listening, or voting as we continue to build a strong culture of leadership and student voice at Wulerrp Secondary College.

Incredible Start for the Year 7s

Dear all,

It has been an incredible start for the Year 7s at Wulerrp. We are all officially through the first phase of the term! On behalf of the Year 7 team, I am thrilled to report that our Year 7 cohort has settled into Wulerrp Secondary College with positive energy and amazing maturity.

Upon walking through the Junior School corridors, many students and teachers will see the classes are highly engaged and settled. Whether its in Humanities, English or out in the yard, we can see our students are truly making a fantastic start to their secondary school journey.

Furthermore, across the Junior School corridors, you’ll see our focus values built upon our umbrella of ‘GROWTH’. We do encourage that families discuss and support these values at home as well.

1. We arrive to class on-time and prepared

2. We maintain respect and speak inclusively with each other

3. We follow all instructions from all staff

In Wulerrp, we believe in celebrating the strengths of our students. This can be in the classroom, in the yard and out in the community. I am pleased to report that, in a very brief period of time, the Year 7s gained over 110 growth points in positive chronicles on Compass (as of 05/02). This data is a collective celebration of our students that includes their academic work during class, but also beyond. It is a collective celebration of the students demonstrating kindness towards others, organisation and many other school values. This will continue to be an ongoing point of celebration throughout the year.

If your child has received these reports, you will be able to individually see those details on compass. Please take a moment with them to celebrate this at home.

We are so proud of our Year 7s. A big thank you to all families for their continued support in making this transition successful.

Warm Regards,
The Year 7 Team

Change to Year 8 Humanities Approach in 2026

In 2026, Year 8 Humanities will be delivered through a semester-long integrated learning model. This approach reflects the direction of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and is designed to support deeper understanding, stronger skill development, and clearer connections between key Humanities disciplines.

How Year 8 Humanities will work

Rather than studying all four Humanities subjects in short, separate blocks as they did in Year 7, Year 8 students will study two closely connected disciplines together each semester:

  • Semester 1: History and Geography
  • Semester 2: Civics & Citizenship and Economics & Business

Each subject retains its own content and focus, but learning is intentionally designed around shared concepts and inquiry questions that run across the semester.

It is important to note that:

  • All learning is fully aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0
  • Students are assessed separately against each subject’s curriculum descriptors
  • Achievement standards for History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business are all explicitly taught and assessed

Semester 1: History and Geography

History and Geography naturally complement one another. Understanding historical events requires an understanding of place, environment, movement, and resources, while Geography is enriched by understanding how human decisions over time have shaped landscapes and societies. We have an exciting fieldwork excursion coming up to further support this learning too!

Through this integration, students:

  • Explore how environments influence historical developments
  • Analyse cause-and-effect relationships across time and place
  • Build stronger spatial and chronological thinking skills

Semester 2: Civics & Citizenship and Economics & Business

Civics and Citizenship and Economics and Business together help students understand how societies function and make decisions.

This pairing allows students to:

  • Examine how laws, governments and democratic systems shape economic choices
  • Understand the roles of consumers, businesses and governments
  • Explore contemporary issues such as fairness, sustainability and responsibility

Students learn to see how power, money, rights and responsibility interact in real-world contexts.

How does this benefit Year 8 students?

This model is designed to:

  • Provide a clear learning storyline across each semester
  • Reduce fragmentation and support deeper understanding
  • Strengthen analytical thinking and real-world application
  • Give students time to revisit and refine key concepts and skills

By slowing the pace and strengthening connections, students are better supported to think critically and confidently.

What remains consistent?

  • Explicit teaching and structured lessons remain central
  • Clear success criteria guide student learning
  • Literacy, numeracy and critical thinking are embedded throughout Humanities
  • Assessment continues to be rigorous and curriculum-aligned

Looking ahead

This integrated approach reflects how knowledge operates beyond the classroom, connected, contextual and meaningful. We look forward to seeing Year 8 students engage deeply with their learning and develop a stronger understanding of their humanness in this world. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home by asking students about the ideas they are exploring in Humanities, and how these connect to the world they see around them.

2026 School Council Election

Notice of 2026 School Council Election and Call for Nominations will open on Tuesday 10 February 2026. More information will be posted on Compass and available on the School Website on this day.

From 2026, parents, carers and community members who would like to join the school council need a working with children (WWC) clearance to nominate. If you are considering nominating for school council, and don’t already have a WWCC, I encourage you to apply for a volunteer WWC check as soon as possible. This will allow for processing times, which are estimated to be from 3 to 12 weeks.

Please note that if you do not hold a WWC clearance, you will not be able to nominate for school council, so it is vital that you prepare in advance. Obtaining a WWC clearance is free for volunteers, and you can apply online at Service Victoria.

When applying for your volunteer WWC check, please nominate the Department of Education as the organisation you are working for.

If you already hold an employee WWC clearance, you do not need to obtain a volunteer WWC clearance to nominate for school council.

Victorian Institute of Teaching-registered teachers and school students who are interested in joining school council are not required to obtain a WWC clearance.

Current parents and community members of school council do not need to apply for a WWC check immediately. Current members only need a WWC clearance if their term ends and they wish to nominate or be co-opted again. For more information, refer to Ministerial Order 1280 (Constitution of Government School Councils) 2020.

Library

The library has unrestricted checkouts. Students are given the choice to borrow what they want to read. This autonomy over what they read encourages engagement in reading through connection with interests. During library lessons, all students get the opportunity to browse for books and borrow ones to take home and read. Students are encouraged to think about their schedules and where they can make time for reading. Please support student to make this time to read. When borrowing students are to think about what books they need, how much reading they will do, what units are being studied, rather than borrowing all the books they want. Borrowers are responsible for items they borrow. It is requested that borrowers inform the library when any items are lost/missing or damaged.

In a secondary school library, students have access to a wider range of content, and our library collection reflects the varied interests, abilities and maturity of the students.. Students are guided on moderating the content they consume and supported through choosing books that fit their reading skills. Literature explores the diversity of human experience and contexts. Given this diversity, students may at times be exposed to resources which may be considered controversial, inappropriate or offensive. If you ever have any concerns and wish to talk about what your child is reading, please email the library.

For more information, please read the Library Collection Development Policy.

To maintain the library's quiet space, the library is currently operating under the following conditions:

Monday
Library open at lunchtime for book club only.

Tuesday
Library open at recess and lunchtime to Year 8s only.

Wednesday
Library open at recess and lunchtime to Year 7s only.

Thursday
Library open at recess and lunchtime to Year 8s only.

Friday
Library open at recess and lunchtime to Year 7s only.
